What was the event brief & objective?
The UK RAS STEPS Technical Showcase was designed to celebrate and elevate the work of Research Technical Professionals (RTPs) within the Robotics and Autonomous Systems (RAS) sector. The primary objective of the event was to provide a high-profile platform for RTPs to showcase their technical achievements, foster collaboration, and gain recognition for their contributions to robotics innovation.

Through a combination of presentations, panel discussions, workshops, and networking sessions, the event aimed to highlight the critical role RTPs play in advancing robotics technologies. It also sought to promote professional development, encourage dialogue around future career pathways, and support the growth of a strong, connected RAS technical community.

Why was the Science Museum chosen for this event?
The Science Museum was chosen because of its national significance as a hub for science, technology, and innovation. As one of the UK’s most iconic institutions dedicated to celebrating scientific achievement, the Museum provided an inspiring and prestigious backdrop that aligned perfectly with the Showcase’s mission to recognise excellence in Robotics and Autonomous Systems (RAS).

Its central London location also offered accessibility for attendees from across the UK, while its historic and forward-looking atmosphere reinforced the event’s dual focus on both honouring current technical achievements and shaping the future of robotics. Hosting the event at the Science Museum elevated the visibility of Research Technical Professionals and underscored the importance of their contributions to the UK’s innovation landscape.

What sort of experience did you want to create?
We aimed to create an inspiring and celebratory experience that truly honoured the contributions of RTPs in the Robotics and Autonomous Systems (RAS) community. The Showcase was designed to be more than just a conference – it was a recognition event that put RTPs centre stage, celebrating their technical excellence, creativity, and impact.

We wanted attendees to feel valued and energised, with an environment that encouraged both reflection on achievements and excitement about future possibilities. Networking was a key priority, so we carefully curated the programme to include ample opportunities for meaningful connection – whether through interactive workshops, informal discussion spaces, or collaborative panels. By bringing together professionals, academics, and industry leaders in a dynamic and welcoming setting, we fostered an atmosphere of mutual respect, idea exchange, and professional growth.

How did you choose which space at the museum you wanted to use?
I was guided by Ellie at the Science Museum, who gave great advice on how to achieve what we envisaged and recommended Illuminate.

How did Illuminate work for your event? What was the benefit of using this space?
The split level was ideal as we were able to have demonstrations on Level 4 with the plenary on Level 5. The panoramic window offers beautiful views across the city, really giving a feeling of prestige.

Who were your catering and AV partners? Did the suppliers create anything bespoke for the event?
White Light were fantastic. They ensured our PowerPoints ran smoothly, that the lighting was matched to our branding, the logo on the LED screens was really impressive and background music/award winners music was ideal.

Moving Venue provided breakfast pastries, granola pots then a hot and cold buffet at lunch with canapes and food pots for the evening as we wanted a relaxed session. The food quality was excellent and Tulullah was fantastic.

What feedback did you receive from guests?
We received excellent feedback about the event with particular praise for the food.

Client testimonial:
“The UK RAS STEPS Technical Showcase at the Science Museum was everything we hoped for and more – a vibrant, high-impact celebration of the technical talent driving innovation in robotics. We set out to create an experience that would truly honour Research Technical Professionals, and Illuminate provided the perfect space to bring that vision to life.

The split-level layout allowed us to seamlessly combine live technical demonstrations with formal presentations, while the panoramic views over London gave the event a real sense of occasion. From expertly managed AV by White Light to exceptional catering by Moving Venue – praised by many as the best conference food they’d ever had – every detail contributed to an inspiring and professional atmosphere. Thanks to the support of the museum team and our suppliers, we created a welcoming and dynamic environment where attendees could connect, reflect, and feel genuinely celebrated”
